Grout does not fail overnight. It fades, cracks and crumbles gradually — which is exactly why so many homeowners live with failing grout for years without realising the damage happening behind their tiles. Here are the signs to look for, roughly in order of urgency.
1. Cracked or missing grout
Run your eye along the grout lines, especially in the corners and along the shower floor. Hairline cracks, gaps where grout has fallen out entirely, or joints that flex when pressed are all open doors for water. Once a crack appears, every shower pushes moisture through it.
2. Grout that crumbles or powders
Press a fingernail gently into a grout line. Sound grout is hard and stable; failed grout crumbles, powders or flakes away. Soft grout has lost its structure and can no longer keep water on the right side of your tiles.
3. Permanent staining and mould that returns
If your grout looks dirty no matter how hard you scrub, or black mould keeps reappearing days after cleaning, the grout itself has become porous. Porous grout absorbs water, soap and organic matter — feeding the mould from within. No cleaning product fixes that; the grout needs replacing.
4. Musty smells that never leave
A bathroom that smells damp even when it is dry is often the first sign of moisture trapped behind the tiles. Trapped moisture has to come from somewhere, and failed grout is the most common entry point.
5. Signs outside the shower
Bubbling paint, swollen skirting boards, lifting floor coverings or water stains on the other side of the shower wall mean water has already travelled beyond the wet area. At this stage, acting quickly matters — small cracks lead to big problems, and the repair bill grows with every week of delay.
