Short answer: absolutely. When a shower or tiled area is regrouted, the old grout is physically removed and replaced — which means you are free to choose a completely different colour for the new grout. For many of our customers, this is the moment a functional repair becomes a mini makeover.
How much difference does grout colour really make?
More than most people expect. Grout lines form a visible grid across every tiled surface, so their colour sets the rhythm of the whole room. Matching grout to the tile colour makes the surface read as one calm, seamless plane — walls feel bigger and quieter. Contrasting grout does the opposite: it emphasises the tile layout and turns the grid itself into a design feature, the look behind the enduring white-tile-dark-grout trend.
Practical considerations for wet areas
Colour is not purely aesthetic. Very light grout in a high-use shower shows organic staining sooner and demands more regular cleaning. Very dark grout can show soap and mineral deposits as light patches. Mid-tone greys and warm neutrals are the workhorses of wet areas for a reason — they hide the daily reality of a working shower while still looking crisp.
Modern grout has come a long way
If your grout was installed decades ago, the product landscape has changed. Today’s high-performance cement-based systems offer better colour consistency, improved water and stain resistance, and additives that resist mould growth. Epoxy options go further again for demanding areas — with the trade-off of a 72-hour cure instead of the standard 24 hours before the shower is used.
Can I just paint or dye my existing grout?
Grout colourants exist, but they are a surface coating over whatever your grout currently is. Applied over aged, porous or cracked grout, they change the colour without fixing the failure — and they wear unevenly in wet areas. If your grout is sound and you only want a refresh, a colourant may serve; if the grout is cracked, stained through or letting water past, replacement is the honest fix, and the colour change comes free with it.
